'Watching' documentary Questions
1)What does Thomas Sutcliffe mean when he says " Films need to seduce their audience into long term commitment. while there are many types of seduction, the temptation to go for instant arousal is almost irresistible"
He implies that the beginning of the film needs to excite the audience but it is quite hard to prevent yourself from showing all the excitement from the film right at the beginning/Title sequence/Film opening
2)According to director Jean Jacques Beineix, What are the risks of 'instant arousal'
There is more pressure for the film to be better and more interesting as the film goes on
3)Explain why " a good beginning must make the audience feel that it doesn't know nearly enough yet, and at the same time make sure that it doesn't know too little"
This is because the audience need to know enough about the film to want to watch it and to be intrigued but should not know to much as the film will then be boring as there is more expected of it. The audience must not know too little as they will not be interested in the movie at all
4)What does critic Stanley Kauffmann describe as the classic opening? Why does this work?
He describes an establishing shot of New york city from the East. There is then a close up of building. The camera moves up the building and goes to a close up of the window. this classic opening works as it tells us where the film is set and tells us the occupation of the ' Hero'
5)Why is Kyle cooper's title sequence to the film Seven so effective?
This is an effective title sequence as it guves a sense of the genre and prepares the audience for what they are about to watch, the opening tells a story and some parts of it foreshadows the events to come in the film
